Outdoor Activities: In the Algarve and 10 km south of Alcoutim, the village of Guerreiros do Rio is located on the banks of the Guadiana River, which is the border between Portugal and Spain. It is surrounded by beautiful areas, which invite you to practice nature sports. There is a river pier with ramp access, allowing nautical sports such as canoeing and jetski, among others. There are also other possible activities at the Guerreiros do Rio River Hotel such as: 4x4, horsebackriding, cycling, pedestrian trails, etc

Leisure and Adventure: There is today an easy access to Guerreiros do Rio using IC27, however it is possible to navigate from Vila Real de Santo Antonio, in a place where nature imposes its wide green areas cut by the Guadiana river and its branches. Monte Gordo beach is only 25 kms away. Castro Marim Golf Course is 15 kms away and several pedestrian trails invite you to visit the river, for time well spent. Ecologic or Green tourism is therefore an excellent alternative to the more traditional offer of Beach and Golf, discovering a wide offer of healthy activities in harmony with the environment.

Gastronomy: The cuisine of Alcoutim and its council relates to the hills and its wide areas featuring meat dishes such as lamb, pork, rabbit, grouse and wild boar. But one can also do a meal just with home made wine and bread baked int the old wood ovens, olives, ham, sausage and goat or sheep cheeses, prepared according to age old recipes. By the Guadiana the menu is richer including several kinds of fresh fish grilled on coal. Local traditional sweets of ancient recipes seduce those with a sweet tooth including among others the famous "nougado" made with almond and honey, well known all over the Algarve. As a digestive, nothing better than a glass of fig brandy or "medronho aguardente", carefully distilled in copper stills in the hill villages.

History & Handicraft: The Guadiana river has marked its local activities and the origin of its name is linked to the period of Roman domination, known then as the river “Ana or Anas”. Later the Arab occupation changes its name to “Vadiana”, which later derives to Guadiana. Through this river have passed all the invaders of the Peninsula, Greeks, Phoenicians, Carthageneses, Romans and Arabs, who knew the richness of the lower Alentejo ore, where one finds today the Sao Domingos mines.

Ancient traditional craftsmanship is still in use today in the villages of Alcoutim council, where wooden looms still produce the colorful rag quilts, comforters and linen tablecloths. Baskets woven with straws that grow on the Guadiana banks still occupy the spare time of craftsmen. Alcoutim’s rich craftsmanship is completed in Martinlongo, where one can find pieces made of brass, wood, wicker and above all the jute dolls, enacting several typical rural chores.
